Pair of Arts and Crafts Period Andirons
In the manner of architect and furniture designer Ernest Gimson.
Each andiron features two domed medallions of pierced and
chased design depicting a central tulip sprouting from a pot and
surrounded by scrolling stems and additional blooms. Mounted
to an iron backing supported by iron legs. According to the
Cheltenham Museum, Gimson sketched a pair of 17th Century
andirons he encountered on a visit to Haddon Hall, Derbyshire in
1888. He later began manufacturing andirons based on the design
after opening a blacksmiths’ shop in 1903.
