striking-set-of-nine-french-animal-prints
Striking Set of Nine French Animal prints

This striking set of nine French animal prints from the 1930s brings together the elegance of early twentieth-century natural-history illustration with the graphic sophistication of the Art Deco period.
Featuring a tiger, rhinoceros, peacock, boa, polar bear, stag, kangaroo, zebra and other exotic and familiar animals, each print combines a stylized animal portrait with French text describing its habits and characteristics. The bold lettering, limited palette, simplified forms and decorative compositions give the works an unmistakably period character. French animal and natural-history prints of the era were often produced as educational material, reflecting the period’s enthusiasm for zoology, nature study and beautifully designed instructional imagery.
Presented here in chic black frames, the nine prints take on a particularly sophisticated decorative quality. Their restrained cream, black and muted-color backgrounds contrast beautifully with the more vivid animal illustrations, while the repetition of the typography and format creates the effect of a cohesive graphic installation.
Made during the 1930s—a decade fascinated by modern design, streamlined forms and the visual language of Art Deco—the prints possess the appealing duality of being both educational artifacts and stylish works of graphic art. The black framing emphasizes their crisp geometry and allows the vintage French typography and illustrations to read almost like a contemporary gallery wall.

Circa1930

Origin French

Stock# 9643
