A four-panel, folding leather screen painted with a chinoiserie scene featuring an unusual blue ground. The scene depicts a central structure connected to a fence. The building and surroundings are populated with a cast of figures, a large wading bird, a butterfly, and a couple brightly colored birds in flight interspersed with vibrant blooming cherry blossoms, lily pads, and other flora; all surrounded by a border of stylized dragons. The fine quality of the painting is evident in the detail of the clothing, the bird feathers, and the well delineated leaves and flower petals. The screen lays flat so that it may be hung on the wall as a painting, and it also folds so it may be used on the floor as a screen. The leather is in very good condition, especially considering the age, and has been re-backed with a canvas lining. The wooden frame backing is also possibly replaced.
